Since its
inception in 1986 the McComb Planning Department has been
responsible for both long range general comprehensive planning and
project specific strategic planning.
With the adoption of the Comprehensive Plan in late 1987 several
innovative areas have evolved.
They are:
Development of specific types of "over-lay" districts around the
city offer more options for both land uses and varieties of related
development that might not occur in a code specific type of
ordinance.
Development of a
long range growth plan led to a successful annexation in 1996 to the
south and west side of the city. This plan was quite specific both
in time of delivery of services as well as extending infrastructure
into the new areas.
The Planning Department is involved in
projects concerning downtown revitalization and reuse of the
Illinois Central Repair yards adjacent to downtown. Both of these
projects were called for in the 1987 Comprehensive Plan. In
addition, work with the Historic District Commission and the McComb
Recreation Department is related to both downtown and the railroad
site in that it will tie together the concept of the central city as
both a residential and commercial area.
Other projects that the department is
involved with are:
Development of an inventory of the houses of McComb that would be of
interest to people who wish to relocate to our city; "The Buildings
of McComb."
Development of a City of McComb web site
as a primary source of information both for and about the city.
Update of the current city map and the
general development code for the city which includes the zoning
ordinance, the historic district regulations and guidelines for
design and landscaping in the city.
The Director of Planning also serves as
advisor to the McComb Planning Commission, the McComb Historic
District Commission, and the McComb Main Street Program as well as
the Board of Mayor and Selectmen and the Chief Administrative
Office.
